DMA launches The Value of Direct Marketing report
New research published by the DMA has revealed the financial contribution the direct marketing industry makes to the UK economy. Caption: Direct marketing generates £205 billion in sales per year According to the findings of The Value of Direct Marketing report, the industry generated £205 billion in sales during 2009. Direct marketing was responsible for creating more than £100 billion in consumer retail sales, and £75 billion in new business for the financial services retail sector.

30 per cent of DM budgets spent on digital marketing For the first time, digital has emerged as the largest sector, with 30 per cent of DM budgets assigned to email and web-based marketing. This compares with 28 per cent of DM budgets being allocated to catalogues and 26 per cent to direct mail.

The report also outlines the financial value of the UK direct marketing industry. Companies last year spent £43 billion on direct marketing. The industry directly and indirectly employs 1.1 million workers, equivalent to 4 per cent of the nation's working population. DMA publishes 4th edition DM Code of Practice
Marketers are being asked to adhere to rules regarding environmental best practice following revisions made to the DMA's latest edition of the DM Code of Practice. Caption: New environmental performance requirements For the first time, the DM Code sets out a series of guidelines concerning the use of data hygiene; making environmental claims in marketing materials; sourcing of sustainable paper; certification in environmental standards such as PAS 2020; and using recycling messages on printed materials.

Now on its fourth edition, the DM Code of Practice is a key component of the direct marketing industry's self-regulatory framework. All DMA members are required to adhere to the DM Code. Caption: DM Code comes into force 1 September 2010 The new DM Code will be enforced from 1 September 2010. This gives DMA members two months' grace to change their systems to ensure they are in line with the requirements of the new Code.
